The Device
The Prowler PFU is based on the Microsoft Handheld / Pocket PC platform, which supports an array of affordable or rugged devices that can be selected to best suit your needs. From tablets to PDA type devices, there are a number of screen sizes, input options, and manufacturers to select from. 

The PDA sized devices usually feature:

• battery life 4 - 12 hours
• backlights
• reflective screens that are visible in full sun
• voice recorder

 
The Process
Before heading out for scheduled field exercises the instructor picks up a freshly synchronized Prowler PFU. 

The Prowler contains all of the class rosters, assessment forms, and instructor guides needed for the day. The synchronization software is driven by the training schedule and preloads all of the needed data without operator intervention.

Once the instructor 'signs in' to the Prowler he can select the appropriate exercise from the day's scheduled events.

The Prowler will then use its stored understanding of the exercise workflow to display screens and criteria as they are needed, reducing the amount of device interaction required. This workflow feature can help guide the instructor through the exercise to enhance the process and training consistency.

Designed to assess individuals and teams, the Prowler permits the exercise and assessment to begin even before the identity of the participating students is determined. Then, when convenient, the instructor scrolls through the class roster contained on the device to associate the results with the appropriate students. 

The Prowler is flexible enough to support multiple evaluators reviewing the same training class or the same student.  This could be handy if the class is regularly split into different groups or if multiple instructors have distinct performance criteria that they are focused on.

At the end of the day the Prowler PFU is returned to the ProwlerSync station for recharging.  This automatically transfers the evaluation data to the database for storage and online reporting with ProwlerWeb.

 
Creating Assessments
Assessments are created and maintained alongside the course and lesson planning activities.  A unique assessment can be created for every exercise, using ProwlerWeb. These assessments will be automatically moved to the Prowler PFU when the training schedule requires it.

A variety of mechanisms can be placed in an assessment to record results. Option lists that look like multiple choice questions, ranking scales that use push buttons or drop lists, 'free hand' scratch pad areas, and voice memo recording can all be utilized as part of an assessment.

 
Software Interface
Ease of use, speed, and readability are important considerations for any field-deployed computing device.

Our focus is on providing real-world workflow solutions that support course developers and reduce end-user frustration levels. 

High contrast screens, use of large typefaces, simplified finger-sized interface controls, and designs that minimize scrolling all contribute to the success of Prowler in the field.
